KCPS, in partnership with the Hale Cook Elementary School PTA, hosted its first annual KCPS Family Field Day on May 13 at Southwest Campus. The event was free to Kansas City metropolitan area students and their families.
The event kicked off with a pancake breakfast from sponsor Restore Church. Students and parents then had the opportunity to try out mini fitness classes and hands-on fitness activities from community partners including Missouri Mavericks, Genesis Health Club, Axe Capoeira, YMCA, Brookside Soccer Club and more.
Missouri Mavericks’ mascot Mac the Maverick joined the fun, taking time to visit with the families. The fun culminated with free snow cones from Kona Ice along with bag lunches from KCPS Nutrition Services.
Developed by Hale Cook Physical Education teacher Matthew Gunsorek and Hale Cook PTA President David Darmitzel, the program was designed to provide an opportunity for students and their families to learn about various fitness and sports programs within their neighborhood.
