Melcher Elementary to Host Tribute to Tuskegee Airmen

School and community groups across KC region invited to attend CAF Red Tail Squadron Exhibit

This April, learning is going to a whole new level at George Melcher Elementary School. The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Red Tail Squadron, America’s tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen, is hosting its unique traveling exhibit “Rise Above” Wednesday, April 19 to Friday, April 21 at Melcher Elementary, located at 3958 Chelsea Ave. in Kansas City, Mo.Melcher Red Tail Squadron

The CAF Red Tail Squadron’s unique program brings the inspirational history of the Tuskegee Airmen alive and out of the textbooks. “Rise Above” is a unique way to experience the inspiring story of America’s first black military pilots and their support personnel.

“We are very excited about the opportunity to share how the Tuskegee Airmen have shaped American History,” Melcher Elementary Principal Patricia Hayes said. “The program teaches valuable principles – like always believe in yourself, never quit, don’t be afraid to think, etc. – to our students in a unique, inspirational format.”

This traveling exhibit is a fully functional, 53-foot mobile movie theater featuring the original panoramic film, “Rise Above,” designed to take the audience on a journey through time and the air. The theater’s dynamic 160-degree panoramic screen creates the sensation of being in the cockpit soaring above the clouds in a P51C Mustang, the signature aircraft of the Tuskegee Airmen. It’s much more than a history lesson; the Tuskegee Airmen’s ability to triumph over adversity serves as a means to inspire others to rise above obstacles in their own lives and achieve their goals.

This exhibit is open to the community! Schools and community groups are invited to schedule student showings of the exhibit starting Thursday, April 20 by contacting Melcher Elementary at (816) 418-6725 or by booking online. The exhibit is available from 12:45 to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, April 20 and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday, April 21. Seating is available for groups of 25 to 30 per timeslot.

“We are very thankful to our community partners at Friendship Baptist Church who made this whole special event possible,” Hayes said.

The CAF Red Tail Squadron’s visit to Melcher Elementary is made possible by the Trice Education Resources, Inc., Bob Sight, Inc. Dealership and Adams Point Conference Center.
