Tigers Roar for Juneteenth Event

Students poets perform at celebration for Hallmark employees

Kansas City, June 20, 2018: The Lincoln College Preparatory Academy poetry slam team performed their original pieces as part of the Juneteenth 2018 celebration for Hallmark employees on Tuesday, June 19 at the Crown Center Pavilion.

Three Lincoln Prep students were on-hand to recite their poetry at the event, guided by English language arts teacher Joyce Nguyen Hernandez. The school’s poetry slam team has won Kansas City’s “Louder Than A Bomb” competition two years in a row, which helped spark their invitation to the Hallmark event.

Juneteenth marks the occasion on June 19, 1865 when Union Army Major General Gordon Granger issued General Order Number 3, which proclaimed the freedom of enslaved people in the state of Texas.

Hallmark’s Juneteenth celebration was organized by the Hallmark African American Leadership Council.
