Kansas City, Dec. 21, 2017: Carver Dual Language Elementary teacher Derrik Wiggins received his official ring as the 2017 Kansas City Public Schools Teacher of the Year during a brief ceremony at the Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 20.

The ring is a men’s version of one designed, made and donated to KCPS by Jostens, a commemorative jewelry, awards and yearbook company. It features a signet style with a blue stone and “Teacher of the Year”  engraved around the bezel. The side of the ring is marked with “2017” and “KCPS.” Mr. Wiggins’ initials are engraved on the inside.

Superintendent Mark Bedell and School Board Vice Chair Pattie Mansur did the honors of officially giving Wiggins his ring during the meeting.

Wiggins was selected as the Teacher of the Year in the spring from a pool of more than 30 nominees representing schools across KCPS. The school system is scheduled to announce the 2018 Teacher of the Year in April.
