Tailgate the Castle

Southeast High School students, alumni, staff and community enjoy a tailgate

Building a feeder community is a priority for David Darmitzel, president of Hale Cook Elementary School‘s PTA. Darmitzel has experienced success bringing students from the south zone together at community events such as the Brookside St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the Southside Family Field Day. It’s that vision that led Darmitzel to lead up the committee to plan and execute Tailgate the Castle, welcoming elementary students and families to a pre-game tailgate.

Tailgate the Castle was hosted Saturday, Oct. 14 at Southeast High School before Southeast’s varsity football game against the East Bears. Students and their families from the south feeder schools along with area Signature Schools were invited to join the fun and learn more about Southeast.

Southeast athletes and student leaders along with alumni hosted visitors on tours of the historic Southeast building, telling stories of old and new, sharing the history and tradition of Southeast Knights and Ladies. Everyone enjoyed a tailgate before the football game, courtesy of Restore Community Church – Kansas City. In addition to the school tour and pre-game tailgate, visitors donated food to benefit KCPS’ Students in Transition food bank.
