Kansas City, Oct. 20, 2017:  A friendly race within the Kansas City Public Schools family is going to reap huge benefits for students.

The following schools are each coming up with creative, fun ways throughout October 2017 to engage their communities in order to help garner $600,000 strategic improvement grants from SchoolSmartKC:

  • Gladstone Elementary School
  • James Elementary School
  • Northeast High School
  • Primitivo Garcia Elementary School
  • Trailwoods Elementary School
  • Wendell Phillips Elementary School
  • Phillis Wheatley Elementary School
  • Whittier Elementary School

These eight schools were picked to participate in a program to develop individualized strategic plans with support from SchoolSmartKC and KCPS in order to prepare for future success. The plans and planning processes will be evaluated next spring, and two to three schools will be selected to receive implementation grants.

With $1,000 to $1,500 pledges from SchoolSmartKC, the schools are launching their strategic planning processes by hosting events this month in order to generate support and excitement among students, parents and community members. Several of the schools have already held events.

Phillips Elementary hosted its event on Thursday, Oct. 19. It featured student performances, free food and drinks, face painting, a bounce house and games. Visit the KCPS Flickr site to view more photos.

Primitivo Garcia Elementary (1000 W. 17th St.) is hosting its event starting at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27.
