School Board Approves Aug. 24 Start Date for 2020-2021 School Year

Academic calendar reflects requirements in new state law signed by governor in 2019

Kansas City, February 27, 2020:  The Kansas City Public Schools Board of Directors (School Board) has approved the academic calendar for the 2020-2021 school year (SY21), which includes an Aug. 24 start for classes.

The School Board approved the SY21 calendar during its regular monthly business meeting Wednesday evening, Feb. 26 at the Board of Education. The calendar is the result of several months of collaboration between KCPS leadership and representatives of the local American Federation of Teachers union.

The SY21 calendar reflects the requirements included in a new law passed by the Missouri legislature in 2019 and signed by Governor Mike Parson. The law directs public school districts in the state to start fall classes no earlier than Aug. 24 this year.

KCPS teachers will report back to work on Monday, Aug. 10 this year. Winter break will be from Dec. 21 to Jan. 1, with a workday on Jan. 4 and classes resuming on Jan. 5. The last day of school is scheduled to be May 27, 2021. The calendar includes a total of 185 workdays for teachers and 172 class days for students.
