Northeast Middle School Class Earns Health Summit Award

Three KCPS elementary schools get honorable mentions leading to March 6 event


Seventh graders in Northeast Middle School teacher Christina Dismang’s class won first place in their grade level in KC Healthy Kids’ “I Am Here” photo contest, according to an announcement made today by the organization.

Dismang’s class will be awarded a $1,000 grant and given a chance to compete for $2,500 during an event starting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6 at the Kauffman Foundation Conference Center.

Dismang’s students submitted photo essays showing how their community helps or hinders healthy habits. Their photos depicted examples of healthy exercise and proper composting strategies.

Kansas City Public Schools also had three honorable mentions in the photo contest:

  • Longfellow Elementary, 5th Grade, Imani Malaika Mehta
  • Banneker Elementary, 6th Grade, Carri King
  • Faxon Elementary, 6th Grade, Teri Campos

Third- through eighth-grade students from six counties in the metro area were invited to participate. The cities of Kansas City, Kan., Kansas City, Mo. and Lee’s Summit, Mo. have issued proclamations designating March 6, 2018 Champions for Health Day in their cities.
