Every morning, sixth grade students at Garfield Elementary school gather for their community learning meeting. During these meetings, students take time to formally greet each other, establish social norms and create a classroom support system.
Students engage in a variety of different activities that focus on recognizing and supporting each other’s differences. These activities set the tone for the rest of the school day and increase student productivity.
Garfield Elementary currently serves more than 500 students from a diverse set of backgrounds and cultures. Teachers and staff at Garfield believe these focused social interactions are a major key to student success.
