By Superintendent Mark Bedell
May 4-8, 2020, is Teacher Appreciation Week. Everything we do in Kansas City Public Schools revolves around the relationships between our teachers and our students. I want to express my gratitude for the work our teachers do every day.
Take a moment to contemplate the job of a teacher. Our teachers do the daily work of making sure our students learn how to read, calculate, plan, research, think, engage and cooperate. Our teachers have made the investment of time and resources to both master the content and the classroom skills to help their students do the same. Our teachers do this with individualized attention and adjustments for each student. They recognize that every child will master content in different ways. Our teachers commit to adopting new educational tools and techniques, to leveraging the resources of their fellow faculty, to receiving critical feedback, and to steady professional development and improvement. Our teachers never stop learning and growing.
Teachers change lives. That truth has become even more apparent throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and the temporary closure of our school buildings. Our teachers have been resilient, flexible and inspiring. My leadership team and I are looking forward to celebrating our faculty and showering our staff with gifts and fun when our school buildings re-open. On behalf of everyone at KCPS, thank you to all of our teachers.
Yours in education
