Local Volunteers Share the Gift of New Shoes with King Students

Samaritan’s Feet volunteers understand the power of a new pair of shoes. Along with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes – Center City (FCA) and Walmart Distribution, they shared the gift of new shoes and socks with students at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School.

The Samaritan’s Feet Shoes of Hope program was born out of the desire to provide not only new shoes, but also a message of hope. When volunteers sit across from a child, they spend quality time talking to them about their dreams, asking about their lives and sharing words of encouragement.

Samaritan’s Feet works to identify partner schools. Walmart donates the new shoes and socks for the students. Local volunteers came from across the Kansas City metropolitan area as part of FCA, including college athletes from the University of Missouri – Kansas City.

The Shoes of Hope program was brought to King Elementary through the diligent work of school nurse Yolanda McRoy.

“Every smile, hug and thank you was worth the effort,” McRoy said. “Kids get teased because they don’t have new shoes, but now, everyone has a new pair of shoes. Everyone is smiling today and that’s great for King Elementary.”
