Families to Prep for School and Have Fun at Summerfest 2019

KCPS expects about 5,000 people for annual event on Saturday, Aug. 3

Kansas City, July 23, 2019:  Kansas City Public Schools is gearing up to help thousands of children and their families get ready for school while having a ton of fun during the 2019 Summerfest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Board of Education park, which is located at the intersection of 29th Street and Troost Avenue in Kansas City, Mo.

KCPS is projecting that about 5,000 kids and adults will attend its annual back-to-school event this year. Sponsored by the Kansas City Public Schools Education Foundation, Summerfest features free backpacks, school supplies and t-shirts for school-age children, plus lunch provided free-of-charge for everyone regardless of age. Families will be able to enjoy an 11 a.m. performance by renowned Kansas City children’s music performer Mr. Stinky Feet, plus soccer and basketball games, bounce houses, and fun, educational activities and crafts.

Because parking at the event will be at a premium, families are encouraged to take the free, roundtrip shuttles being provided by the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA). The shuttles will run throughout the event starting at 9:30 a.m. from Northeast High School (415 Van Brunt Blvd.), Manual Career and Technical Center (1215 E. Truman Rd.), Central High School (3221 Indiana Ave.) and Southeast High School (3500 E. Meyer Blvd.).

Leaders, teachers and support staff from every KCPS school will be manning tables to give away the backpacks, supplies and t-shirts, and to showcase their individual schools. The KCPS Enrollment team and staff from other offices like Language Services will have tables, too. School Board members, Superintendent Mark Bedell and his leadership cabinet will be available during scheduled times to have conversations with family members.

An entire zone of Summerfest is devoted to promoting students and community health and wellness. Students can receive immunizations, asthma prevention and treatment information, hearing checks and athletic physicals. This area will include representatives from:

  • KCPS Office of Nursing Services
  • Swope Health Services
  • KC CARE Health Clinic
  • Children’s Mercy Hospitals & Clinics
  • Truman Medical Centers
  • Asthma Ready Communities
  • Kansas City Health Department
  • United Health Care
  • MissouriCare
  • Home State Health

Summerfest will also include an entire tent set aside for community partners. About 40 organizations are expected to be on hand to interact with members of the public during the event.

Summerfest is made possible thanks to the support of the KCPS Education Foundation and a long list of generous sponsors, including Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City, Costco, the Kansas City-area McDonald’s franchises, Children’s Mercy, Smithfield, Home State Health, reStart, KCATA, Arvest Bank, Country Financial and Truman Medical Centers. Many of these sponsors will also have representatives at the event.

About 200 volunteers coordinated through Uncover KC will also be preparing for Summerfest 2019 and serving families during the event. Anyone interested in volunteering for Summerfest can do so through the Uncover KC website at uncoverkc.org.
