Kansas City, March 15, 2018: The Kansas City Public Schools Board of Directors named the school system’s debaters as Scholar Superstars during a meeting Wednesday, March 14 at Success Academy at Knotts.
One of Superintendent Mark Bedell’s top priorities is to ensure that ALL KCPS students have the opportunity to participate in high-quality extracurricular activities that enrich their experience, bridge the gap between classroom lessons and their lives outside school, and help prepare them to succeed in the 21st century global economy. To that end, KCPS developed a partnership with DEBATE-Kansas City in order to nurture debate opportunities for students in our schools.
That partnership is proving to be very fruitful. The KCPS debaters are winning accolades and honors across the region and nation. For instance, two Lincoln College Preparatory Academy students earned invitations to compete at the National Urban Debate Championship in Washington, D.C. next month; and the debate squad at Foreign Language Academy recently won the city-wide championship.
