2017 Convocation Celebrates ‘Built for This’ Team

KCPS teachers and staff gather at the Kansas City Music Hall to get fired up to start the year


Kansas City, Aug. 11, 2017: The team that is built to educate Kansas City kids is ready to launch a great school year.

The Kansas City Public Schools 2017 Convocation was held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10 in downtown Kansas City’s Music Hall. The theme of this year’s Convocation was, “Built for This,” which reflects the fact that KCPS educators are uniquely built to develop our children to succeed in a constantly changing world.

Convocation was an opportunity for approximately 2,500 KCPS employees to get fired up for the 2017-2018 academic year, which started on Monday, Aug. 14. The event was emceed by comedian Jay Phillips and featured remarks by Superintendent Mark Bedell, School Board Chair Melissa Robinson and KCPS 2017 Teacher of the Year Derrik Wiggins, music and a parade of schools.
