Kansas City, April 30, 2018: More than 100 people from across Kansas City turned out for the debut Benjamin Banneker Elementary School 5K Run & Walk for Autism Awareness on Saturday, April 28.
In nearly perfect spring weather conditions, participants ran and walked their way around the school’s neighborhood in an effort to raise awareness about autism. Proceeds from the entry fees will be used to equip a special educational sensory room for the students with autism who attend Banneker Elementary.
The event started with breakfast for the participants and ended with a party in the school’s playground. The school plans to make the 5K an annual event.
“This is a great day and we’re all looking forward to making it even bigger and better next year,” Principal Harrison Neal said. “The most important thing is that it’s going to help ensure that we meet the educational needs of ALL our students. That’s our mission every day here at Banneker Elementary!”
