KCPS high schools competed in the annual Interscholastic League Track Meet on May 3 at Joseph G. Bryan Field at Southeast High School. Athletes from East High, Northeast High, Southeast High, Central Academy of Excellence and Lincoln College Preparatory Academy came together to fight for the title of IL Champion.
Both the boys and girls teams from Lincoln finished in first place with Central finishing in second and Southeast in third place.
Returning Lincoln Prep junior Mikayla Deshazer, who finished first in discus and second in state last year in the shot put, took the IL title for both shot and discus.
“We are expecting her to win both the shot and disc this year at state,” KCPS Athletic Director James Sanders said. “Plus, this year she added javelin to her repertoire.”
Southeast senior and track leader Machiyla Knight, who runs 100 Meters, 200 Meters and 400 Meters, is holding strong against the competition both in the IL and in the state.
“Machiyla performs and runs to the competition,” Sanders said. “She competed against top runners from Class 5A and 6A and she did very well. We expect her to come back from state competitions with the gold.”
Central senior Dre’Shaun Sanders is experiencing a banner season, winning the majority of his races this year and earning an invitation to the KU relays earlier in the season. In addition to winning the IL 100 M, 200 M and 400 M races, Sanders is currently ranked second in the state for 100 M, fourth for 200 M and third at 400 M. Sanders has been accepted to Missouri Western to play football and run track.
Another notable athlete who did well during the IL Track Meet is Southeast junior Doedy Patterson. Patterson runs 100 Meter High Hurdles and 300 Meter Hurdles.
