April 6 Hearing is Opportunity for Public Input on FY18 Budget

Meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. at Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts

Kansas City, April 6, 2017:  The Kansas City Public Schools Department of Business Services will be hosting a public hearing on the preliminary budget for the 2018 fiscal year starting 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 6 at Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts, which is located at 4747 Flora Ave. in Kansas City, Mo.

The hearing is an opportunity for KCPS staff to present and gather feedback on the preliminary budget, which covers projected revenues and expenses for the 2017-2018 academic year that begins on July 1. The presentation will include an outline of how KCPS intends to use public resources to address critical focus points and priorities for the upcoming year.

An earlier public hearing on the preliminary budget was held during the March 20 District Advisory Committee meeting.

The preliminary FY18 budget forecasts approximately $188 million in revenue and expenditures, a decrease of about $1.5 million in revenue and $1.2 million in expenditures compared to the current fiscal year. Though assessed valuations within the school system are projected to increase about 6.5 percent, it is anticipated that revenue from the 1 percent Proposition C sales tax will decrease along with state and federal funds.

The KCPS property tax levy stands at $4.9599 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. That remains one of the lowest public school levies in the Kansas City, Mo. region.
