Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School
How are you working to increase equity in education and opportunity for students in your school?
I am an active member in the Problem Solving Team. I help teachers with interventions for behavior using my background working as a Resource teacher. There are several students whose behavior improved once the interventions that the team recommended were put in place.
What message about public education do you want to share?
A major public education issue that I am passionate about is student discipline. I believe that there are better ways to deal with student misbehavior. We need to teach students how to behave. If a student doesn’t understand how to add, we reteach addition. The same should be done for behavior. On top of that, if a student receives In School or Out of School Suspension, that student is not where they need to be, in the classroom learning. I always tell my students that their place is in my classroom preparing for their future.
