Manual Career and Technical Center
How are you working to increase equity in education and opportunity for students in your school?
I took six female students to the Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day sponsored by the Society of Female Engineers. These young ladies were exposed to professional females in STEM careers as well as university student mentors. Following this experience, one of my students plans on continuing in the engineering field.
What message about public education do you want to share?
There are numerous well paying jobs in STEM fields that go unfilled in our city as well as around the country. However, there is a lack of interest within our students to take courses that would provide them the skills for these jobs. More awareness starting in elementary schools and steering students towards the courses of study needed in middle and high schools would help. Having students graduate from our high schools prepared to succeed in college with STEM majors is of great importance to me.
