What motivated your career in education?
After a few years as a computer programmer and missionary in the Caribbean, I decided I want to spend my time on earth making a positive impact in the lives of others, particularly youth. I was motivated by my experiences in school and how great teachers made a positive impact on my life and my personal view that what we leave behind, our legacy, is far more important that what we acquire in life. I wanted to leave a legacy of positivity that left people in a better place than when I first encountered them and that is what education does.
What message about public education do you want to share?
Public education is at the very core of a free and democratic society. It is our best and brightest hope of creating a society where people are truly judged by the content of their character and where every person truly has a chance to acquire the “American Dream”. Public education is the very first line of defense against social deterioration, terrorism, and tyranny. It is through public education that our entire culture constantly evolves, as all social trends and movements first began in the incubator of public education and worked their way out.
A society is only as good and as noble as the education that it provides for its most disenfranchised children.
Public education must succeed on the highest level so that we can all succeed to the best of our gifts and abilities.
