Some of Kansas City Public Schools’ youngest scholars have access to more reading resources thanks to Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson, his Defend the Dream Foundation, Scholastic Books and IBT Industrial Solutions. Johnson and representatives from Scholastic and IBT helped launch new DJ’s Discovery Dens on April 25 at Wheatley Elementary School, April 26 at Melcher Elementary School and April 27 at Faxon Elementary School.
DJ’s Discovery Dens are specially designed reading spaces in each school with comfortable furniture, Chiefs colors, Derrick Johnson posters and more than 1,200 age-appropriate books. The cost of spaces were covered by Johnson’s foundation and IBT, with Scholastic donating the materials.
The three dens opened this week are just the latest to be installed in KCPS schools. Johnson’s goal is to open a DJ’s Discovery Den in every Title I elementary school in Kansas City. IBT officials plan to help open an additional den at King Elementary School in the fall of 2016.
