South KC Alliance Honors KCPS Mentorship Program

Initiative leaders recognized at annual awards breakfast

Kansas City, August 23, 2018: The South Kansas City Alliance gave its Outstanding Educational Achievement Award to the Kansas City Public Schools Mentorship Program during a breakfast banquet this morning at Avila University.

KCPS School Board Chair Melissa Robinson, Vice Chair Pattie Mansur and Superintendent Mark Bedell joined Assistant Superintendent of Equity, Inclusion and Innovation Derald Davis and Mentor Services, Innovation and Special Projects Coordinator Sherenna Clinton at the event to accept the award. The alliance hosts the annual breakfast in order to recognize individuals, businesses and organizations that make outstanding contributions to the community.

KCPS has embraced a district-wide strategy to engage more students in school-based mentoring programs. Mentoring within schools has become an increasingly popular and effective way to bring a caring adult or older peer relationship to the lives of more youth. The school setting provides an opportunity to reach a larger number of students in an environment that also allows access to educational, recreational, and developmental supports to help enhance mentoring relationships. Our programs are designed to equip each student with the unique type of support that best meets their needs.
