Lincoln Tigers Roar At Slam Poetry Competition

Team earns top 10 finish during the 'Brave New Voices' international event


Kansas City, July 23, 2018: The Lincoln College Preparatory Academy poets were once again deemed among the world’s best during the 2018 Brave New Voices international slam poetry competition July 18-21 in Houston, TX.

The Tigers earned their way into the semifinal round of competition of 16 teams out of 50 that started the event. The Lincoln team finished in eighth place against student poets from around the world.

Lincoln Prep sent the following slam poets to the international competition:

  • Aisha Arij (2018 graduate)
  • Abby Espino┬áSalazar (sophomore)
  • Danielle Foster (2018 graduate)
  • Carson Mueller (2018 graduate)
  • Marjai Neal (senior)
  • India Jane Walker (junior)

The team is coached by Lincoln Prep teacher Joyce Nguyen Hernandez, author and slam poet Madison Mae Parker, and KCPS staff member Adrianna Schoonover, a slam poet who graduated from Lincoln in 2017.

Lincoln Prep garnered an invitation to the 2018 international competition after getting first place in the Kansas City Louder Than A Bomb poetry slam event earlier this year. The team was sponsored by the American Jazz Museum.
