As many KCPS students enjoyed the holiday weekend, area high school track and field teams made their way to Jefferson City High School for the Missouri Track and Field Championships. For KCPS, this was an outstanding year for district schools and track athletes, with more student-athletes attending the state competition.

Lincoln College Preparatory Academy’s team took several athletes to Jefferson City including junior Mikayla Denshazer. For the second year in a row, Denshazer claimed the state champion title in discus, taking first place in the Class 3 Championships with her record-breaking throw of 159 feet, 10 inches. In addition, Denshazer took the state championship title in shot put.

“We were expecting Mikayla to win both the shot and disc at state this year,” KCPS Athletic Director James Sanders said. “Watching her break the Class 3 record was an extra bonus.”

For the first time in recent memory, an East High School student qualified for the state competition. Sophomore Mapenzi Yamungu competed at the state level in the 200 M dash, finishing in 12th place in the Class 4 preliminaries.

“We are extremely proud of Mapenzi competing in the tough Class 4 division,” Sanders said. “He’s just a sophomore so we expect to see him qualify for state next year and have a top finish. He is bringing a tradition of excellence back to East track and field.”

Both Southeast High School and Central Academy of Excellence had top athletes qualify for state competition. Southeast senior Machiyla Knight raced hard during the 300 M Hurdles and finished in second place with Lincoln Prep junior Nele Neal finishing fourth. After running strong qualifier races, Central Academy senior Dre’Shaun Sanders hurt his hamstring during his last preliminary race on Friday. He did his best during the final events on Saturday and finished in the top eight for all three of his races.

Relay teams were strong during state competition. Lincoln Prep’s Girls 4 x 200 M Relay finished third place with Central Academy finishing in seventh place. In the Girls 4 x 100 M Relay, the two teams exchanged spots and Central Academy finished in third place with Lincoln Prep finishing in seventh place. Lincoln Prep’s Boys 4 x 200 M Relay finished in eighth place.

“Lincoln Prep’s girls relay team is comprised of freshmen and sophomores,” Sanders said. “We have said it before, but we are excited to watch them develop in the next couple of years.”

Overall, Lincoln Prep overall team finished in fourth place in Missouri Class 3. The Southeast and Central Academy boys teams tied for 31st Place out of 65 teams. The Central Academy and Southeast girls teams tied for 27th Place out of 61 teams.
