Kansas City, March 16, 2017: Kansas City Public Schools Superintendent Mark Bedell laid out his vision for a new approach to safety and security in public education for a piece published in the Spring 2017 issue of the Journal of School Safety.
“For the rest of my life, I will never forget my conversation with a middle school student who thought he was going to die,” Dr. Bedell writes in article’s opening. “That’s why I, and many of my colleagues, believe it’s time for schools and their safety officers to refocus on being resources for students.”
The Journal of School Safety is published by the National Association of School Resource Officers. Dr. Bedell is a member of the association’s national board.
Dr. Bedell has made it a top priority to change the culture with KCPS schools and ensure that students and their families are nurtured and supported. Safety and security reforms are an integral part of his plans.
“This student-centered approach to building schools extends to safety and security,” he writes. “We will stop focusing on triage-and-treat and instead turn our attention to developing community-wide solutions that will turn our neighborhoods into integral parts of our school system.”
