Central Academy of Excellence senior quarterback Javion Shelby was nominated as a finalist for the Frank Fontana Award for the Most Outstanding Small Class Football Player in the Greater KC Area.
Shelby had an impressive season with 1900 yards passing and 16 touchdowns as quarterback along with 939 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns.
The Frank Fontana Award is part of the region’s Simone Awards, which honors the metro’s top football players. Finalists named for these awards often go on to be very successful not only in college, but also in the National Football League.
The Simone media committee chose 10 semifinalists for each of the five awards. Those in the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association and select members of the media will select the four finalists in each category by Nov. 28. Winners will be announced Dec. 5 at the high school of the Simone Award recipient.
In addition to his nomination, Shelby was also named Interscholastic League Offensive Player of the Year as Shelby helped lead the Central Eagles to a Conference Championship.
